Io as Isis: A Lycophronean Myth in Nonnus

چکیده

This article aims to examine one of the myths belonging first part Nonnus’ Dionysiaca, i.e., that Io. Starting from philological analysis passages dealing with this myth and adopting an intertextual approach, I will argue Panopolitan assimilates Io Isis following Lycophron, authors employed as a model in his poem. Finally, also explain meaning choice inside work, taking into account its historical context. Nonnus wants emphasize role Dionysus’ lineage civilization process, giving it relevance. Therefore, allusion Lycophron Cadmus (Dionysus’ grandfather) Alexander Great, who is celebrated peacemaker Alexandra. Furthermore, offspring can be connected Romans, who, at time Nonnus, played same rising Byzantine empire.
